To celebrate and promote women’s health and safety, ĀKAU facilitated workshops in Kaikohe where wāhine (women) of all ages were asked these same questions:
WHERE DO YOU FEEL SAFE? WHO MAKES YOU FEEL SAFE? WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL SAFE?
To them safety was whānau & community, church, personal tāonga and the home. Everyone should feel safe at home. The wāhine came together over two days and learnt the art of story-telling through mark-making then screen printing their art, while we were asked to capture their stories with these portraits. What resulted were some beautiful, vulnerable, gentle and sometimes confronting stories and images.
The portraits were printed at 594 x 841mm on Epson Hot Press Bright Cotton Rag – 325gsm. They were exhibited alongside various furnishings with the patterns from the workshop printed on them.
We were honoured to be a part of this project. Check out more of what the wonderful ĀKAU are up to on their website (link below). You may also purchase the limited edition exhibition prints on their site.
